Prime Minister announces $120 million funding for Northern Heart Centre
Today, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced his Government’s support of the new Northern Heart Centre at the Launceston General Hospital with a $120 million funding commitment.
Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff attended today’s announcement at the Launceston General Hospital, signing the funding agreement alongside the Prime Minister.
“This commitment will deliver benefits to Northern Tasmanians for generations to come. We know Tasmania has the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in the country, and by bringing these services closer to those who need it most, I am confident lives will be saved.”
The Northern Heart Centre is designed to enhance access to cardiac diagnostics, procedures and additional ward beds on its new cononary care unit with a capacity of 16 inpatient beds and two cardiac cath labs where common heart treatments are hosted.
Clifford Craig Foundation CEO, Vanessa Cahoon, welcomed this certain investment to the Northern Tasmanian region.
“This investment answers the call from the community to enhance access to cardiac care closer to home. It’s exciting to see another new development at the LGH, and compliments the soon to be established Research and Innovation Centre undergoing construction shortly.”
The build at the Launceston General Hospital is expected to take five years.
