‘Puppy becomes patient’ | Get well soon Gilbert

April, 2023

The Launceston General Hospital’s wonderful facilities canine Gilbert is on sick leave.

Sadly, Gilbert had dislocated his patella and will need surgery.

It means he has had to step away from his work in the LGH Emergency Department for at least a couple of months.

Gilbert’s handler Dr Lucy Reed said the poor boy is feeling very sore and sorry for himself, but she has promised to keep everyone posted on his surgery and recovery.

If you didn’t know, Gilbert is a former Guide Dog and is the first facility dog to be used in an ED anywhere in Australia.

He has been a valuable part of the LGH team since September 2021, joining in on daily rounds and providing a calming presence for patients and staff.

We would like to wish Gilbert a speedy recovery!
