New historical book published | Enquiry on Mulgrave Square 1908: Launceston General Hospital

The LGH Historical, Visual and Performing Arts Committee are pleased to announce their third book for 2023 has been published and is now available from the Clifford Craig Foundation.

The books accounts the events surrounding the resignation of three nursing sisters from the Launceston General Hospital and the retirement of Dr James McImery Pardey.

Written by Paul A.C. Richards and Carol Burnett, it tells the story of a major enquiry lasting from June to September in 1908 where three senior and well qualified nursing sisters resigned from the Launceston General Hospital because of its unholy state and management.

Not only did the Nursing Sisters resign, but a past Surgeon Superintendent Dr James Pardey resigned as well.

Interestingly, only two lines appeared in the hospital’s annual  report for 1908.

The suffragette movement was at its height and seeing the emergence of three strong women standing up to the Lady Superintendent Ms Jeanette Milne and Surgeon Superintendent Dr John Ramsay plays out in the recording of the enquiry transcript.

This is a must read for the nursing fraternity.

All books published by the LGH Historical, Visual and Performing Arts Committee are available to purchase from the Clifford Craig Foundation office, on Level 5 of the LGH or can be ordered online.
