Jim Markos recognised in Australia Day Honours
Clifford Craig Foundation is fortunate to boast a number of talented and loyal supporters within our community. The Foundation is thrilled our former researcher and Board member, Jim Markos, retired Respiratory and Sleep Physician, was recognised in this year’s Australia Day Honours recipients as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). This recognition is for Jim’s commitment and service to medical research and health education, specifically within the areas of respiratory health and sleep disorders.
Jim has published over 30 research papers as part of his contribution to medical research, and created the catalyst for Launceston’s popular Breath of Life music festival, raising awareness and funds for improved regional lung health initiatives, such as reduced wood fire burning in the region and reduced smoking rates, which at the time in the 1990s and 2000s was putting Northern Tasmania within the highest rates of respiratory illnesses in the nation.
“Jim will always be part of the fabric this Foundation through his pioneering research and advocacy, followed by his leadership on our Board for many years. I am thrilled Jim has been honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia. This award recognises Jim as a strong community-orientated person and shines more light on the significant impact his respiratory research and sleep studies made here in Launceston and greater Northern Tasmania,” said Clifford Craig Foundation CEO, Vanessa Cahoon.
Jim Markos attended a packed Launceston General Hospital farewell event for his retirement in 2024 with colleagues.
