Dr Lauren Giles

A Neurologist at the Launceston General Hospital, Dr Giles studied medicine at Monash University and worked as a junior doctor in Darwin before returning to Melbourne to study neurology at the Austin and Royal Melbourne hospitals.

She joined the LGH Neurology team in 2019, with her move to Tasmania offering somewhat of a “tree change” to escape the big city, with Dr Giles pursuing a passion for providing access to specialist health care outside of a metropolitan region.

Her current areas of research interest are in Motor Neurone Disease and MS, in particularly collaborating with fellow researchers in Hobart and interstate to improve Tasmania’s access to multi-centre trials.

This includes the Clifford Craig Foundation-funded Lighthouse II project – a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled Phase 3 trial of Triumeq in MND. It is the first time an international multi-centre MND therapeutic trial has been offered locally in Tasmania – and a first for the LGH.

Dr Natasha Vavrek

Dr Natasha Vavrek is Director of The Bubble Tasmania - a specialist women’s health clinic known for exceptional pregnancy and post-partum care and management of new-borns.

This clinic was the first of its kind in not only Tasmania, but Australia, when it opened in the height of the pandemic in 2021. It now has offices in Launceston and Hobart.

During her medical training, Dr Vavrek noted persistent gender inequities in medicine and medical leadership in Australia.  As a mother of young children herself, she quickly became passionate about supporting mothers working within general practice by providing flexibility and eliminating inequity.

She is a proud advocate of her profession and through her work at The Bubble is slowly changing the narrative through greater empowerment for the women that work within it and for the women that walk through the doors seeking their services.
