Christmas appeal raises $50,000 for HALO RFA system

January 2022

Late last year we asked for your help in securing a vital piece of medical equipment for the Launceston General Hospital.

The Foundation is now thrilled to announce that with the support of the community, we have raised enough funds to purchase a HALO Radiofrequency Ablation system for the LGH Gastroenterology Department.

The HALO RFA system uses high-energy radio waves to burn and destroy pre-cancerous cells found in the oesophagus.

Until now, Tasmanian patients requiring this life-saving treatment needed to travel interstate.

But with this machine at the LGH, surgeons such as Dr Scott Fanning (pictured) will be able to perform this procedure, which is considered best practice for patients at-risk of developing oesophageal cancer.

Clifford Craig Foundation chief executive Peter Milne said this was another great example of the community banding together to help improve the acute referral hospital for the state’s North and North-West.

“Raising $50,000 in such a short amount of time shows the value our community places on their hospital, and the services it is able to provide,” he said.

“All Tasmanians should have access to the best standard of care, no matter where they live.

“We know the addition of this new piece of medical equipment is going to have a significant impact on future health outcomes and we are very proud to have achieved this result.”
