When it comes to having a stroke, “time = brain”. This is because a stroke destroys up to 1.9 million brain cells every minute.

Sadly, Tasmania has the highest incidence of stroke per capita in Australia, meaning 1500 Tasmanians will have a stroke each year.

Strokes kill more women than breast cancer, and more men than prostate cancer.

As part of Stroke Awareness Week (August 8-14), we caught up with the head of the Launceston General Hospital’s Stroke Department Dr Dinesh Tryambake.

In the video below, Dr Tryambake answers some common question about strokes including what to do if you think you, or someone around you, is experiencing a stroke.

The first step in getting better outcomes from stroke is getting to hospital quickly, and that means recognising the F.A.S.T. signs and calling triple zero (000) straight away.

The FAST test is an easy way to recognise and remember the signs of stroke.

The FAST test involves asking these simple questions:

  1. Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?

  2. Arms – Can they lift both arms?

  3. Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?

  4. Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 straight aw

Stroke facts:

  • One in four people globally will have a stroke in their lifetime.

  • More than 445,087 Australians are living with the effects of stroke.

  • Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers. It kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer.

  • More than 80 percent of strokes can be prevented!
