74: The COMIVID Study

The COMIVID Study ($79,300) – Professor Rob Fassett

The greatest risk for patients with kidney failure is death from cardiovascular disease such as heart attack. Once they have started dialysis this particularly becomes a problem for patients.

There are two main types of dialysis, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. It is not well known or studied as to which one of these may be less likely to accelerate cardiovascular disease.

Our study will compare vascular structure and function in these two types of dialysis patients prospectively over the first year of their treatment. We will perform non-invasive scans of blood vessels before they start dialysis and at six and twelve months after. We will compare the results between those who have haemodialysis and those who have peritoneal dialysis.

The results will hopefully assist decision makers when starting patients on dialysis in the future and help minimise cardiovascular disease.
