49: Benefits to older adults of community based exercise training

Benefits to older adults of community based exercise training ($75,250)
This is an intensive, but real-life study to document the range of possible benefits of these types of exercise programs on a wide variety of measures: including muscle strength, fitness, and results of an exercise stress test, cardiovascular function, blood vessel flexibility, blood lipids and glucose tolerance, antioxidant status, measures of bone metabolism, psychological status, and cognitive function (thinking). The exercise program and study will be conducted in Launceston and in Ulverstone.

Several postgraduate students will work on the program, which will thus provide research training for some North West residents.

The study is being jointly funded by the Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust (two thirds) and the North West Medical Research Fund (one third).
