05: Air pollution, environment health and respiratory diseases

Air pollution, environment health and respiratory diseases (Northern Tasmania)

The Trust provided $3,000 to help complete one of Tasmania’s largest environmental health research projects. The Air Pollution, Environmental Health and Respiratory Diseases Working Party, led by Dr. Lloyd Lyons, analysed data from the study to assess relationships between air pollution, local meteorology and respiratory conditions in the community. The study added to our knowledge and understanding of how the Tamar Valley winter smog affects diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and other chronic obstructive lung complaints.

A further $2,000 was granted in 2000 to provide additional funds for the ongoing air pollution monitoring in the Tamar Valley.
